MTTR: repair time or restoration time?

Define the clock before comparing restoration performance.

UNDERSTAND THE CONCEPT

MTTR is used with different meanings, including mean time to repair and mean time to restore. A useful calculation requires an explicit start and end event. Active repair duration excludes some waiting time; elapsed restoration duration may include detection, access, material and verification.

Sum the chosen durations and divide by the count of corresponding completed events. Keep open events visible so incomplete long repairs do not disappear from the review. A distribution or a long-duration exception list often reveals more than the average alone.

Questions to take back to your team

  1. Which start and finish timestamps define this measure?
  2. Are waiting and active work separated?
  3. How are open restoration events presented?
