UNDERSTAND THE CONCEPT

Confined spaces can contain hazards that are not apparent from their appearance or from a person's previous experience. Definitions and legal requirements vary by jurisdiction, and specialized assessment is needed to determine the applicable controls and entry arrangements. A general induction, visitor badge, or completed awareness lesson does not establish that a person is qualified or authorized for confined space work.

From a planning perspective, identify the need for the site's confined space process early and refer questions to the designated qualified personnel. Work scope, trained roles, emergency arrangements, and interactions with surrounding activities all require appropriate review. Do not treat a stored permit template or an earlier entry record as permission for a new entry. This article provides recognition and coordination concepts only; actual work must follow current site-approved procedures and specific authorization.

Questions to take back to your team

  1. Has the site program owner reviewed whether confined space requirements apply?
  2. Are awareness records distinct from role qualifications and authorization?
  3. Is the proposed activity being reviewed using current site information?
