UNDERSTAND THE CONCEPT
Permit systems need to describe more than a simple open or closed state. Work may be paused, responsibilities may move between shifts, or the crew may report its activity complete while other reviews remain outstanding. Suspension, handover, and handback have different meanings within a site's procedure. Clear distinctions help prevent an unfinished job from being interpreted as ready for normal operation.
Record the actual state and the responsible people using the approved local process. A digital completion button must not imply equipment release or restart authorization unless the designated process explicitly establishes that meaning and its required checks. Incoming personnel need relevant information about unfinished work, restrictions, and outstanding decisions. This awareness article does not prescribe a restart sequence. Qualified, authorized staff determine revalidation, handback, and return-to-service requirements for the specific situation.
Questions to take back to your team
- Does the recorded state distinguish paused work from completed work?
- Who currently holds the relevant responsibility?
- What separate decisions remain before return to service?
