UNDERSTAND THE CONCEPT

A practical assessment examines how a person applies knowledge and skills to a defined task or scenario. It should use criteria appropriate to the work and be conducted by a suitable assessor under approved arrangements. The assessment setting matters: a simulation, supervised demonstration, and observation during ordinary work provide different kinds of evidence and may have different limits.

Record the task scope, conditions, criteria, assessor, result, and any restrictions or development needs. A pass should not silently extend to different equipment, more complex conditions, or another site. Feedback is most useful when it identifies specific strengths and gaps rather than only a score. Assessment activities themselves must be planned safely using site-approved procedures; creating an uncontrolled hazardous situation to test someone is unacceptable. Responsible personnel determine when reassessment or further supervised practice is appropriate.

Questions to take back to your team

  1. Do the criteria match the actual role and task scope?
  2. Is the assessment setting appropriate and safely controlled?
  3. Are limitations and next development steps recorded clearly?
