Reliability of equipment in series

Understand how required components affect a mission.

UNDERSTAND THE CONCEPT

In a series reliability model, every required component must function for the system to succeed. With independent failures and compatible mission definitions, system reliability is the product of the component reliabilities.

A physical piping diagram is not automatically a reliability block diagram. Define the required output and decide which items are necessary for success. Shared utilities and common causes can violate independence. Use the simple equation only within its stated no-repair mission assumptions.

Questions to take back to your team

  1. Are all modelled stages required for success?
  2. Does the mission definition match across components?
  3. Could a shared cause defeat independence?
