UNDERSTAND THE CONCEPT
A useful KPI has an owner, a definition, a period and a decision it supports. Completion rates alone can reward closing easy work while critical defects age. Combine workload and execution measures with indicators of equipment outcomes and unresolved risk.
For each metric, publish the numerator, denominator and exclusions. Show missing data rather than converting it to zero. Use trends and appropriate peer groups; comparing a new utility plant with an ageing process train without context can lead to the wrong priorities.
Questions to take back to your team
- What decision changes when this KPI changes?
- Are missing records visible?
- Can a user trace the metric back to its source events?
