UNDERSTAND THE CONCEPT

Reactive work responds after a fault is discovered. Preventive work follows a time or usage interval. Condition-based work responds to observed degradation, while predictive methods estimate a future condition or event from data. These approaches can coexist on the same equipment.

Choose tasks by failure mechanism, consequence and the ability to detect useful warning. A calendar replacement does not address every failure mode, and a sensor does not automatically create a predictive programme. Record why a task exists, what finding changes the decision and when its effectiveness will be reviewed.

Questions to take back to your team

  1. Which failure mode does this task address?
  2. Is there enough warning to act on a condition finding?
  3. Who reviews the strategy when failures recur?
