Reliability-centred maintenance: the starting questions

Build maintenance decisions around function and failure consequences.

UNDERSTAND THE CONCEPT

Reliability-centred maintenance starts with required function in a defined operating context. The team identifies functional failures and credible failure modes, then examines effects and consequences before selecting applicable tasks or other actions.

A useful workshop includes people who operate, maintain and understand the design. Avoid beginning with a list of favourite technologies. A task should have a defensible connection to the failure mechanism and a meaningful response when a defect is found. Keep assumptions and unresolved evidence gaps visible.

Questions to take back to your team

  1. Is the required function measurable?
  2. Have operating conditions and failure consequences been recorded?
  3. What evidence supports the proposed task?
