CHBC UNIVERSITY / FIELD GUIDE

Importing enterprise data without losing control

Use mapping, validation, review and reconciliation.

UNDERSTAND THE CONCEPT

A controlled import maps source fields to a defined target model. Validate identifiers, units, required relationships and duplicate handling before committing a large dataset. A successful file upload does not prove that the imported records are correct.

Use a reviewable preview with rejected rows and explicit update rules. Keep the original source and import result so totals can be reconciled. Plan how to correct or reverse an erroneous batch without erasing subsequent legitimate work.

Questions to take back to your team

  1. Are create and update rules explicit?
  2. Can rejected rows be corrected without duplicating accepted records?
  3. Do reconciled totals match the agreed source?
