Connecting OT data to enterprise software

Preserve operational boundaries when sharing equipment information.

UNDERSTAND THE CONCEPT

Operational technology interacts with physical processes, while enterprise systems organize business records and decisions. Connecting them needs attention to availability, timing, access and the consequences of commands. A maintenance dashboard does not need unrestricted control-system access.

Define the information flow and use an architecture reviewed by the responsible OT and cybersecurity teams. Monitor data quality, timestamps and connection failures. Separate observation and analytical recommendations from any authority to change a physical process.

Questions to take back to your team

  1. Which data is needed and in which direction?
  2. Who approves the OT connection architecture?
  3. How are stale data and connection failures shown?
