As-designed versus as-built information

Keep design intent separate from verified installation records.

UNDERSTAND THE CONCEPT

As-designed information describes an intended arrangement. As-built information records the installed arrangement following the applicable verification and acceptance process. The difference matters when changes occur during fabrication, construction or commissioning.

Define who verifies the record and what evidence is required. A contractor’s upload is not automatically an accepted as-built. Track outstanding changes and link them to the affected assets, drawings and model objects so operations can see incomplete handover information.

Questions to take back to your team

  1. What evidence supports the as-built status?
  2. Who accepts the installed record?
  3. Are outstanding changes visible to the receiving team?
