UNDERSTAND THE CONCEPT

A piping and instrumentation diagram represents process equipment, connections and instrumentation using the project’s conventions. It provides engineering context for equipment relationships. It does not by itself establish the current physical state or authorize an intervention.

Connect asset tags to the applicable drawing revision and retain the legend and supporting design information. Where field conditions and drawings disagree, use the site’s controlled review process. A convenient digital viewer should not conceal uncertainty about the installed configuration.

Questions to take back to your team

  1. Is the applicable revision and legend available?
  2. Are tags linked to the correct installed equipment?
  3. How are discrepancies reported and resolved?
