CHBC UNIVERSITY / FIELD GUIDE

Engineering document revision control

Make document status and revision meaningful to the field.

UNDERSTAND THE CONCEPT

Revision control identifies which version of a document was reviewed and released for a particular purpose. Revision number alone is insufficient: a document may be draft, under review, approved for construction or accepted as a record of the installed state.

Keep revision history, approval responsibility and superseded status. Link issued work to the applicable document revision so later changes do not rewrite the evidence of what was available at execution. Establish a process for withdrawing obsolete field copies.

Questions to take back to your team

  1. Is revision distinct from document status?
  2. Can issued work retain its original document reference?
  3. How are obsolete copies identified and withdrawn?
