UNDERSTAND THE CONCEPT

A drawing register is an index that helps people locate and assess relevant technical information. Useful fields include document identifier, title, discipline, system, revision, status and responsible owner. Filename alone is a weak substitute for this structure.

Link a document to multiple assets where necessary without duplicating uncontrolled copies. Use consistent identifiers across transmittals and review records. Review permissions and access for external parties so sharing a package does not unintentionally expose unrelated engineering data.

Questions to take back to your team

  1. Which fields support reliable retrieval?
  2. Can documents relate to several assets without duplication?
  3. Who controls access and accepts the incoming package?
