Asset criticality: prioritize by consequence

Use an agreed consequence framework to guide review effort.

UNDERSTAND THE CONCEPT

Criticality helps prioritize attention by considering the consequences of losing an asset function and the context in which failure occurs. Safety, environment, production, quality and recovery needs can all matter. A high purchase price does not automatically make an item critical.

Document the scoring basis and involve the relevant disciplines. Treat a numerical score as a screening aid, not a substitute for specialist risk assessment. Revisit criticality when operating context, redundancy or process arrangements change.

Questions to take back to your team

  1. Which consequences drive the ranking?
  2. Are redundancy and operating context represented?
  3. When must the assessment be reviewed?
