UNDERSTAND THE CONCEPT
CMMS focuses on maintenance planning and records. Enterprise asset management extends the view across acquisition, operation, maintenance and retirement. These capabilities overlap, so product labels alone are less useful than a clear workflow and information model.
For an enterprise, the asset record should connect technical identity, location, ownership, work history and relevant commercial information. Decide which system owns each field and how corrections propagate. A shared identifier prevents a pump from becoming several unrelated records across departments.
Questions to take back to your team
- Which lifecycle decisions need support?
- Who owns the authoritative asset identifier?
- Are accounting groups and physical equipment mapped explicitly?
