CHBC UNIVERSITY / FIELD GUIDE

Building an asset hierarchy for a large plant

UNDERSTAND THE CONCEPT

An asset hierarchy expresses how equipment belongs to a plant. A useful structure separates a functional location from the replaceable item installed there. This preserves the location history when a motor or pump is exchanged.

Choose levels that support work planning and reporting without adding empty detail. Define naming rules, parent relationships and rules for moving equipment. Store technical attributes in fields rather than forcing every attribute into a long asset name.

Questions to take back to your team

  1. Is a location distinct from an installed serialized item?
  2. Can each child have an unambiguous parent?
  3. Does the hierarchy support both planning and reporting?
