UNDERSTAND THE CONCEPT

Renewal planning evaluates future service needs against asset condition, risk, obsolescence and cost. An old asset is not automatically a poor asset, and a low book value does not establish low operational importance.

Use a common evaluation horizon and identify uncertainty in failure, support and production assumptions. Compare options with engineering and financial reviewers. Keep mandatory obligations and constraints visible rather than burying them inside a single financial score.

Questions to take back to your team

  1. What service requirement must the option satisfy?
  2. Are alternatives compared over the same horizon?
  3. Which assumptions would change the preferred option?
