Bottlenecks and plant throughput

Connect local equipment improvements to whole-system output.

UNDERSTAND THE CONCEPT

A bottleneck is a constraint that limits the required system output in a given operating state. Improving non-limiting equipment may increase local capacity without increasing plant throughput. The limiting point can shift with product mix, feed conditions or equipment availability.

Map the flow, buffers and dependencies before attributing a production gain. Compare sustained capacity under the required conditions, not only nameplate values. Review whether an improvement simply moves the constraint to another part of the process.

Questions to take back to your team

  1. Which stage currently limits the required output?
  2. How do buffers and operating modes affect the constraint?
  3. Where would the constraint move after the proposed improvement?
