UNDERSTAND THE CONCEPT
A loss tree groups production loss into meaningful categories so teams can investigate where output is lost. Define the operating baseline, event boundaries and cause hierarchy. Distinguish a physical equipment event from the production impact that event caused.
Concurrent outages need a documented attribution rule. Summing each equipment’s downtime can overstate plant loss when several assets are unavailable together. Keep raw events and derived allocations separate so the analysis can be reproduced when definitions change.
Questions to take back to your team
- What is the production baseline?
- How are overlapping events attributed?
- Can users inspect the underlying event timeline?
