How to calculate OEE

Combine availability, performance and quality on a consistent basis.

UNDERSTAND THE CONCEPT

Overall equipment effectiveness combines availability, performance and quality: OEE = A × P × Q. Express each factor as a fraction. Availability uses run time over planned production time; performance compares actual output with the ideal rate; quality uses good output over total output.

Agree the production boundary and definitions before comparing areas. Batch, continuous and mixed-product operations may need careful treatment of rates and quality. A high combined score can hide deterioration in one factor, so show the components and the data behind them.

Questions to take back to your team

  1. Is planned production time defined consistently?
  2. Does the ideal rate match the product and process?
  3. Are quality losses counted on the same output basis?
