Energy intensity for industrial operations

Normalize consumption with a clearly defined production measure.

UNDERSTAND THE CONCEPT

Energy intensity expresses energy use per unit of relevant output, such as megawatt-hours per tonne. It can help distinguish production-volume changes from changes in energy performance, but the ratio still depends on product mix, operating conditions and the measurement boundary.

Keep energy units consistent and state which utilities are included. Track absolute consumption alongside intensity. Investigate meter coverage, idle loads and process changes before claiming that a lower ratio proves an efficiency improvement.

Questions to take back to your team

  1. Which meters and utilities define the boundary?
  2. Is the production denominator comparable over time?
  3. Are absolute use and normalized intensity both visible?
