Responding to an out-of-tolerance finding

Preserve evidence and assess affected decisions through a controlled review.

UNDERSTAND THE CONCEPT

An out-of-tolerance result raises a question about the instrument and about prior decisions that depended on it. Record the as-found condition before adjustment where the approved process requires it, and preserve the calibration evidence.

A qualified review should consider the affected time window, measurement use, uncertainty and potential impact. Do not assume every prior result is invalid or that a successful adjustment resolves the historical question. Document disposition and corrective follow-up through the applicable quality process.

Questions to take back to your team

  1. Is the as-found evidence preserved?
  2. Which prior decisions could be affected?
  3. Who owns the documented impact assessment and disposition?
